Our Top 5 Ways You Can Help Your AC And Save Money
These tips aim to help you relieve the stress on your air conditioning system, save money on your energy bills, and legthen the lifespan of your AC. You’ll also reduce the likelihood of breakdowns or repairs being needed, and improve the air quality in your home.
Annual maintenance
An annual tune-up can help your air conditioning run better by eliminating wear and tear and ensuring all components are working properly. This can improve energy efficiency, save on cooling costs, and extend the life of your system. In addition, simple things like cleaning your outdoor unit, making sure it’s clear of leaves and debris and that plantings are at least a foot away will help make your system “breathe” and work more efficiently.
- Change the Air Filters
If you regularly replace the air filter on your AC, you can reduce energy consumption y 5–15%. Filters can become clogged in as little as 30 days, so you should check it regularly. In Spring and early summer, pollen can be an issue. If you have had any work done on your home- tile, drywall, painting, etc., the added dust can clog filters quickly, so consider replacement after any major home project. This has a side benefit of also increasing your indoor air quality and reducing allergies! Also, do make sure all your vents are clear- it’s easy to drop a laundry basket over a floor vent, and this can make your system work harder trying to evenly cool your home. - Adjust the temperature- and use fans
Increasing or decreasing the temperature on your AC by a degree or two can help reduce energy consumption. When you’re not home, adjusting the temperature up to 78o can help you save money. Most experts recommend keeping your AC between 74o and 78oF is optimal to keep the humidity in your home low, and using ceiling fans to help keep the air circulating will help keep everyone comfortable. - Use a smart thermostat
A smart thermostat can help you reduce your AC’s power consumption by allowing you to program the temperature you want in your home. Many smart thermostats are also connected to the internet and can be accessed remotely. Some smart thermostats will also “learn” about your habits and help set a schedule for you, to help maximize your energy savings over time. Close curtains and blinds
Blocking direct sunlight and reducing heat from windows during the day can help boost your AC’s cooling efficiency and lower your energy costs. It also can help prevent sunlight from bleaching out wood floors and upholstery, so this can save you money in more ways than one!
